Fixed locations vs. Flexible locations

Depending on your plan and the nature of how you serve your customers, locations are configured in one of two ways in your account: fixed locations or flexible locations.

If your employees report to work at a specific primary location regularly — and customers come to your business — then your account should be using fixed locations.

If your employees travel to meet and service your customer base across a territory, then your account may be eligible to use flexible locations.

In this article:

What are fixed locations?

Fixed locations allow you to set up a profile composed of street address, city, state, zip code, country, and phone number, which can be applied to any job you post through CareerPlug.

This means that if your business uses fixed locations, you can set up the profile for each of your locations once and never have to think about the details of where you're posting your jobs again!

You can view your fixed locations by navigating to Settings > My Organization > Locations.

If you want to post jobs and attract applicants in a different city and/or zip code, you can add a new location to your account.

If you don’t see any locations available, you need to add a location to your account first. Only admin users may add locations to an account. An admin user must contact CareerPlug to delete locations on their account.

We recommend businesses keep one fixed location for every 25-mile radius they recruit. In other words, if you have multiple physical locations in non-contiguous territories, each location should be represented by a different fixed location in CareerPlug. And if you manage franchise locations across state lines, consider separate CareerPlug accounts for each state.

How do I add a fixed location?

1. To add a location to your account, navigate to Settings > My Organization > Locations.

2. Click the plus icon (+).

Don't see a plus icon (+) in the upper left corner of your Locations page? Contact CareerPlug Support and we can help you add fixed locations to your account.

3. Fill in the information about your location.

4. Click the Save button to create your new location.

The Name of your location can be a city name, a building name, or a cross street near it — it's up to you. The Location Number/ID can be the location's name if you don't use unique location identifiers.

If your plan states that additional locations must be purchased when you try to add a location, click the Billing details page link in the Purchase location pop-up to be redirected to your Plan Details page.

At the bottom of the Plan Details page, enter the number of locations you want to add and click the Add locations button.

How do I use fixed locations?

When you're creating a job, simply choose a location from the drop-down menu.

When your job is sent to the job boards, the location profile associated with your job will be copied to your posting, ensuring it is posted in the correct city and zip code on the job boards.

Fixed locations can also be used to grant or restrict users' access to jobs in your account. Full and limited access users must be associated with at least one location in order to take any action or view any jobs or applicants in their CareerPlug account.

Can I post a job to multiple fixed locations at once?

If you need to make multiple hires for this job across multiple cities or zip codes and want to use the same job description and settings, you can click the Select Locations link below the location drop-down menu to add more locations when you're creating a new job.

What are flexible locations?

If your account is eligible for and has flexible locations, you should still set up fixed locations in your account to represent recruiting territories, but you'll also have the option to manually enter location information for your jobs when creating a new posting.

So if you wanted to post your job in the area around your location instead of that exact brick-and-mortar location, you can manually change the zip code to extend your search radius and give you access to a broader applicant pool.

Your business may not even have a brick-and-mortar location and you do all of your recruiting and working virtually — flexible locations allow you to still post your jobs in a specific location/region.

Even if your account uses flexible locations, you will need a fixed location if you have any LLCs. You can still post to surrounding territories to help broaden your search based on the jobs you have available.

How do I use flexible locations?

When you're creating a job, you can still select a location from the drop-down menu (as long as you have a fixed location created in your account).

But with flexible locations, you can override the details associated with your selected location by manually entering a different City, State, ZIP Code, and/or Country in the appropriate field.

Your job posting and the applicants you receive will still be tied to the specific location you selected, but your job will post in the newly designated city and zip code, as well as a 25-mile radius around that, creating a wider search area for job seekers on the job boards.

If you're hiring for another brick-and-mortar location — rather than trying to widen your search area — you should be using an additional fixed location rather than trying to use flexible locations.

Be cautious when using flexible locations. Since your jobs are posted in the 25-mile radius around your zip code, if you post multiple jobs within that radius, this will cause visibility issues for all of your jobs in that area.
